How We Shed Hunt With 4 Kids (and Still Find Antlers)
Think shed hunting with kids is a lost cause? Think again.
Yes, they complain. Yes, they get distracted. But they also spot sheds before we do more often than we’d like to admit.
Here’s what we’ve learned shed hunting with our crew (ages 10 to baby in a pack):
1. Keep It Short & Sweet
We don’t plan all-day hikes. 1–2 hours max, with snacks and breaks built in.
2. Give Them a Job
Whether it’s carrying the “shed pack” or being the “spotter,” kids love having a role.
3. Praise the Process
Even if they don’t find one, we make a big deal out of trying hard and hiking far.
4. Snacks Are Sacred
This is not the time to forget gummy bears or fruit leathers. We rotate “trail treats” weekly.
5. Be Okay with a Slow Pace
We’ve learned to stop for every bug, rock, and stick—and honestly, it makes the day better.
Shed hunting with kids isn’t efficient—but it is magical. It’s wild, messy, loud, and full of wonder.
